After losing our beautiful German Shepherd Brandie in early 2007, we set forth to create a healthy alternative to the common store-bought treat. Many commercial dog treats contain unnecessary fat, calories, preservatives, artificial colors, by products...well, I could go on and on. In 2009, we opened the Regal Beagle Bakery with nothing but all natural goodness in every treat and cake. After all, we strive to eat healthy ourselves, shouldn't we give only the healthiest foods and treats to our dogs too? They depend on us to make good choices for them that in turn will increase their longevity.
Barney and our most recent rescue and new family member Coco enjoy our all natural treats and don't miss the commercial treats one bit. In addition to our treats, we also feed them fresh cut up carrots and apples and freeze dried veggies, fruit, beef, chicken and duck - all low calorie, all natural, all healthy. Just a side note, it's important to slice the apple up avoiding the core, the seeds can be very harmful to dogs. Not all foods that are healthy for us are healthy for our dogs. This ASPCA link includes a complete list of people food to avoid feeding your dog: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/people-foods.aspx.
The next step is to take a look at what we are feeding our pups at meal time. That is the point of this blog. As we research healthier meal plans for our two dogs, we thought it might be helpful to share our findings. In this blog, we hope to master and share the art of healthy cooking for dogs. Bone Appétit!
